Home should be your safe haven, your safe space, your place of solace, rejuvenation, and calm, right? So, why is it that some of us may not feel exactly “at home” in our home?
There are a myriad of reasons why we may not feel necessarily serene in our living space.
One reason is because it’s too full of clutter (and, thus, our mind feels cluttered). On the surface, clutter can be the physical things – trash under the sofa cushions, dirty clothes and belongings that haven’t been used for many months, or years, still sitting in the same corner where you’d first placed it. Physical clutter does reflect on our state of mind!
But, what do you do when you have either already physically decluttered living space, or you feel like something else is lingering, that makes you feel unsettled? To be more specific, what do you do when you can sense that you’re not alone, even though you may live by yourself, or you know your roomie is not there? Sensing a presence in your living space can be uncomfortable, to say the least! And, can definitely clutter up your energetic space, making you feel like your home is not safe, at all.
In my previous article, “How To Develop Your Intuitive Gifts Without Being Overwhelmed By Them: Part I – The Discovery“, I mention ways we receive information. Some people call it psychic ability. But, frankly, we’re all gifted! Some of us have just focused attention on developing them, while others may deny them.
For those of us who are clairvoyant, meaning that we receive intuitive information through sight, or seeing Spirit (through our physical eyes or our mind’s eye), that may mean that we can “see” things beyond the physical plane. This means you may be able to see auras, Spirit Guides, angels, and, yes, even those spirits who are no longer on the physical plane.
If you’re clairsentient, you can sense these spirits. Usually, if something is off in your living space, and there is energy in your living space other than you, you can sense these spirits first, before seeing them.
Sometimes, it could be ancestors visiting, or dear loved ones passing by and checking in. But, if you are clearly uneasy about how the energy feels in your home, such as with energy shifts that feel dense, trust your instincts. There is a difference in how light energy feels and how denser energy feels. Light energy feels exactly that, light. Whereas denser energy feels uncomfortable, maybe heavy, and definitely something you don’t want to hang around! If you are clairsentient, you may even feel their anger or sorrow.
Because my patients know that I enjoy helping them heal themselves on all levels, including those that are not physical, they usually share their stories with me that they may not share with others. Including their stories related to things they’re picking up. Or, should I say, whose energies they’re picking up.
One such instance was a patient, S., who initially came in for neck and shoulder tension. She also mentioned that she had a hard time sleeping. Sometimes, it was getting to sleep, at other times it was staying asleep.
I soon learned that her sleeping issues arose because she could feel a presence around her when it was time to go to bed. Lights would often flicker, and, even though it was constant, her logical mind rationalized that her electricity was simply out of sorts. She would also feel someone watching her at night, hence making it difficult to fall asleep.
At first, she felt the spirit was someone protective, and she thought it could’ve been her father (who had passed, and whom she dearly missed) who was checking in on her. During at least one instance, however, she felt pinned to the bed, and couldn’t get up, no matter how hard she tried. That’s when she knew that this was not a friendly presence.
When I asked her what the energy of this presence felt like, she said it felt a bit “heavy” and “lonely”. During our chats, I’d discovered that she first started to experience this during a time of great sorrow, when she’d felt most alone, and expressed how lonely she was. And, she’d feel the presence more menacingly when she became involved with a new beau, or was dating somebody. Because of this, she never fully explored romantic relationships during this time.
When we’re desperately lonely, so much so that we call out to the universe, sometimes it’s done in such a way so as to attract spirits who are lonely, too. This is not to say that when we are having a bad day, and remark at how lonely we may feel, that this automatically happens. That is not the case.
But, when it’s deep, long-standing loneliness, and our energetic defenses are down, leaving us way too open, it is then that we can be vulnerable to attachments. I’ve noticed that attracting attachments is also more easily facilitated when out in nature, like the forest. Such was the case with my patient.
Some spirits may be attached to a home, others may attach to people. In regards to my patient, hers was the latter, since this presence had followed her when she moved to another apartment. But, this illustrates that sometimes you need to delineate the difference between a space that needs clearing, or whether or not you need to clear old habits, patterns, or beliefs. In S.’ case, she had started to clear out her old patterns and beliefs, but didn’t know how to clear the presence that had initially attached to her, and thus, was affecting her living space.
In the end, we figured out the best way to help her clear her space, and set intentions and boundaries around ownership of her personal energetic space and home, so that she could feel more peace of mind, and sleep more easily. This resulted in her no longer feeling the presence, she slept with more ease, and enjoyed exploring new love relationships.
Clearing the energy of your home doesn’t have to be the result of such a dramatic experience. Sometimes, you may just need to clear it after an argument (it’s important to clear that instead of letting it linger in your house or apartment, particularly if you live with the person you’d just argued with). At other times, you may just feel the need to decompress after having an intense day, and you may be feeling jittery, and slightly wired and raw. Or, maybe you just want to create a clear, open atmosphere that is conducive to healing, so that you can feel more sumptuous when you get home from a long day!
Whatever the case may be, here are some helpful tips to clearing your living space:
- Burn white sage. There are many ceremonial herbs you can burn to clear your apartment or house. A great general purpose ceremonial herb that is very clearing is white sage. You can get a white sage bundle at most local health food stores and Whole Foods. You can bless yourself and your space (I find that people often bless the space, but forget to bless themselves, too) by lighting the white sage bundle with a lighter or match, then allowing the flame to go out, releasing a plume of smoke. I often like to bless myself first, by letting the smoke pass over my energy centers (chakras), and wafting it over parts of my body, including waving the stick behind me (360 coverage). I then continue to bless my space, starting at the front door, and blessing my apartment in a clockwise fashion, until I end up back at the front door. When you bless your body, you can either accompany the waft of white sage smoke with the intention of clearing the energy around you, or you can literally say, “I bless myself”. If you’d like to go further, you can bless parts of your body by saying, “I bless my heart”, “I bless my throat”, etc. When you bless your living space, start by welcoming your Spirit Guides to bless the space, and welcoming all energies of light to clear your space. If you feel like you are being visited by dense energies, clearly state that you only welcome those of light and love, and that those who are not light and love are not welcome, and must leave. Suffice to say, you need to mean what you say. This is your space, after all! No need to be aggressive, but just simply state the energetic boundaries of your home. Your intention is what’s most important.
- Take an epsom salt bath. When clearing your living space, especially if you feel like you are being visited by an unfriendly presence, it is important to clear your aura. The reason being is that our aura, which emanates from each of us, can get fragmented through daily living. And, if you are experiencing entities, you can easily absorb what’s going on in your house, if you have yet to clear it. So, clear your own energetic field, so you can get clear on what’s yours and what’s not, energy-wise!
- Sprinkle protective herbs in the four corners of your living space. My favorite protective concoction is the combination of the herbs hyssop and rue, and the mineral, salt. Mix a small amount together, and sprinkle into the four corners of your living quarters. If you like, you can sprinkle them into the four corners of each room in your home, as well. With either scenario, this creates a protective grid.
- Get a Space Clearing Spray, or make your own. Last week, specifically to share with the Fall Detox Wellness Workshop participants, I created the first of my product line, my Space Clearing Spray. It’s a spritzer made with a handmade blend of clearing and protective essential oils (yes, oils don’t just smell nice, they actually have energetic properties!), infused with Reiki energy (by yours truly) towards the purpose of clearing and protecting your space, and made with love. Of course, you can also create your own personal mix, if you like! A quick spray in the affected areas of your home can make all the difference.
If any of the above sound a bit “witchy” to you, we are in that time of my favorite holiday, Halloween! But, seriously, these are common sense actions you can take when you want to reclaim your haven. And, take it from me, they work!
Have you had to clear the energy of your living space for any reason?
