When Healers Get Fibroids: Part II: My Recovery After Laparoscopic Myomectomy
Five months ago, I wrote about my discovery that I had uterine fibroids (also known as leiomyomas or myomas), in my post, “When Healers Get Fibroids (Or: Honoring How We Birth Our Ideas Into The World)“. At the time, it was a personal struggle for me as to whether or not to share my story, since, when first creating this blog, I wanted to focus more on the bigger picture of holistic healing, with a big dose of Acupuncture and Reiki, since that is what I perform most in my private practice. “Who really wants to hear about my personal health issues?”, I thought. However, since I last posted that blog, I have received feedback from women in Africa to America sharing their stories about fibroids, thanking me for sharing my story. It is apparent that I am not the only woman looking up things online pertaining to uterine health and fibroid issues!
As I mentioned in my above previous post, according to Dr. Elizabeth Stewart, the Chair of Reproductive Endocrinology of the Mayo Clinic, about 1 in 4 women have uterine fibroids sometime during their lives. As I also mention in that same post, although there are some factors that can increase a woman’s chance at getting fibroids on a Western medicine level, there are no real causes given as to what creates them. However, being the energy worker that I am, I did further research on any energetic causes of fibroids, and I was surprised to find that on the energetic level, there are various possibilities as to why they occur!
Energetically, I found out that fibroids may represent:
- difficulty with “birthing” new ideas
- a physical manifestation of fear or blockage about birthing our new ideas out into the world
- a tumorization process of old, negative, toxic thoughts, emotions, or feelings that are clumped together and proliferate
- our creativity that was never birthed
- when we are flowing life energy into dead ends, such as jobs or relationships that we have outgrown
- conflicts about creativity, abundance, reproductions, and/or relationships (in other words, 2nd chakra issues)
- anger that your creative energy has been blocked
In addition, in Chinese Medicine, fibroids are considered a result of Qi & Blood stagnation.
The Discovery
When I first found out that I had fibroids, I went through a gamut of emotions: anger, shame, impatience, hope, stubbornness, surrender, you name it. Considering that I am a healer by trade, I had initially judged myself for not having avoided this. After some time, however, I realized that I was thankful to my body for bringing it to my attention that certain important things were not being acknowledged/paid attention to/released, in a non-malignant way, and that, in coming face-to-face with what I’d created, once addressed, I would never allow it to manifest again.
I also knew that this type of thing didn’t just happen overnight. After an MRI and second transvaginal sonogram, which differed slightly from each other in results, I was told that I had 3 fibroids that were large, exophytic (meaning fibroids that are located outside of the uterus), and pedunculated (fibroids that are attached to the uterus by a stalk.) One was behind my uterus at 8.7cm, one on top of my uterus at 6.2cm, and one on the right side of my uterus at 2.3cm. So, respectively, my uterine cornucopia consisted of a grapefruit, orange, and a plum. This differed greatly from the initial transvaginal ultrasound results I’d had, which, as I’d mentioned in my previous blog post, indicated I’d only had two fibroids, one was the size of a pear, and the other, a tennis ball.
The Decision
I kept getting signs that what I was learning something about myself was really big. One of the more significant signs was when I suddenly woke up at 5:55am, and I was told to make a mental note of that time, and to look up what it meant. When I looked it up, I found out that it indicates that major life changes were in store for me, in a very big way. That significant changes and transformations are here for me and I have an opportunity to break out of the chrysalis and uncover the amazing life I truly deserve as a spiritual being, and that my life purpose and path are awaiting me. Since I had no idea what it meant by “major life changes”, I wasn’t necessarily jumping for joy when I read the meaning, even though I knew, at the end, somehow it would all work out. But, if it meant transforming and breaking out of my chrysalis, I knew it would all be for the best.
In addition, when I woke up at 5:55am, I’d just had a dream that I saw 2 angels, one Archangel Rafael (angel of healing), and another angel whose name I did not get. Archangel Rafael didn’t say much, but the other angel said, in an excited voice, “You’re going to be having a big surgery! You’re going to be ok.”
When I woke up, even with the wonderful meaning of 555, and the wonderful dream of support, I was unsure how to proceed with how to address my fibroids. Even though I had a surgery scheduled for August, I was not ready at all to move forward with it, so I canceled it. At the time I’d made my anti-surgery decision, I was told I had the two fibroids, and since my symptoms weren’t so bad, I considered holding off and seeing what I could do with non-surgical ways to address fibroid reduction. In fact, I was rather hellbent on not having surgery, and going about things naturally.
I researched my Traditional Chinese Medicine texts, since there are great herbal formulas to reduce fibroid masses, acupuncture which helps reduce them, as well, and Western herbs that I learned of, from my Western herbalist friend who holds a long-standing Western herbal apothecary in NYC, to help dissolve masses and clean out my liver of excess hormones, since it was evident that my hormones were overloading my liver and feeding my fibroids! I could feel that the blood supply was not totally focused on my uterus, and was being “diverted” to nearby nether regions, such as my fibroids!
I found out that with the Chinese herbs, alone, I could greatly reduce each fibroid to the size of a golf ball within 3-4 months, and thereafter, the reduction would be much slower, but, eventually I’d end up with greatly reduced fibroids. To be ultra safe, I understood that giving myself a full year to have my fibroids greatly reduce would be the reality. I also cut down, bigtime, on my supplements, and focused only on those supplements that my body could more easily recognize as food (and thus easier on my digestion and liver metabolism), including my multivitamin. So I changed from a great multivitamin in pill form, to liquid herbal form, Floradix Multivitamin. Great stuff! Been using it ever since. My body could feel the difference. I also started taking tinctures of my herbs, rather in pill form, if I could. I did HerbPharm’s Chickweed tincture, 1 dropper full 5 times daily, to dissolve the masses, and HerbPharm’s Liver Health (which contains dandelion, milk thistle, and other excellent herbs to remove excess hormones from my liver, and help it do its job of removing impurities), also 1 dropper full 5 times daily. Vitex/chasteberry would be another great tincture to take, but for various reasons, I did not choose that to be part of my herbal arsenal. I am a bigtime nourishing herbal infusion drinker, and I started to drink herbal infusions that were particular in nourishing the female reproductive system, removing toxins, reducing masses, and were rich in vitamins and minerals. I switched up my batches of infusions, from single herbs to a mixture of them, and some of them included nettle, violet, red clover, oat straw, alfalfa, watercress, and others. I also did castor oil packs with saran wrap and heating pad often throughout the week, which helps to shrink fibroids, as well, and is excellent, in general, for detoxing (as a side note, castor oil packs over your lower abdomen during painful menses for a half hour will greatly reduce pain!) I followed my castor oil pack treatments with 2 tablespoons of olive oil to help remove the toxins from my system.
It felt great to take care of my body in such a detailed way, sending a definite communique to my uterus that, although I appreciated the non-malignant message, I’d learned my lessons they were giving me, and their time was done! I supplemented myself with meditations to envision my uterus at its normal size, pink, and healthy, and to strengthen my 2nd chakra strongly through releasing whatever’s been holding me back, keeping me stuck, and welcoming in new energy, and owning it.
At this time, I’d also asked my Reiki Master/Teacher to “look into” my fibroid condition and see if she could pick up anything related to its genesis. She then told me what she picked up, that they were related to issues passed onto me from my mother. Upon further exploration during meditation, I discovered that these were issues not only passed down to me from my mother, but had been issues passed down to her from her mother, and for many generations in the past. Through some deep meditation, I uncovered what those issues were, and through Reiki exchanges with fellow Reiki Masters who are also dear friends of mine, I found out that I had subconsciously decided to end those ancient, generational issues, mainly because they were interfering with my own health, and creating blockages in my uterus, but also to bring healing to my family.
Aside from the issues passed down to me from my mother, I had also learned that there was some past life bitterness I had held onto, along with issues in this life from a few years ago, of having felt stuck. Energetically, I was carrying a lot of stuff that was ready to be removed and released!
Also, at this time, the Chong Mai area of my face (the Chong Mai, or Penetrating Vessel, in Chinese Medicine, has a lot to do with gynecological health, so when you see breakouts/hives in this area, it is worth seeing your gynecologist for a checkup), which is in the chin area, and extending sometimes outward towards the jaw, was getting many sudden, and uncharacteristic breakouts, hives, and pustules. With all of the herbal detoxing I was doing for my uterus, these breakouts indicated that I was releasing the toxins during my new herbal protocol. Though it wasn’t fun to experience, it was a sign that I was on the right path.
A month after I started my herbal and castor oil pack protocol, I learned that I had the 3 large fibroids, not just 2 medium ones. It was also becoming clear to me, through my meditations, that the “physical evidence” that my fibroids provided me of my release needed to be physically removed. Not just dissolved, but removed. I could also tell that the fibroids were inhibiting the free flow inside me, and pressing my organs up into my diaphragm, and my breathing was definitely affected. And my lower back pain was beginning to increase, due to the largest fibroid pressing against my spine. It was time to reschedule my surgery.
A month before my surgery, I went to visit my parents. It was a wonderful, healing experience for me. But, I was shocked that, for seemingly no reason whatsoever, the breakouts/hives/pustules that had sometimes plagued me for those past few months, in the Chong area of my face, had increased suddenly and strongly! In fact, it was starting to spread under my chin into the neck area, as well. This had never happened to me before. It was quite alarming, and this happened the entire time during my visit. Strangely enough, it was only when I’d returned home to NYC, that the Chong area of my face healed up. And not only did it heal up, but I barely heard a “peep” from my Chong area ever since. No hives, breakouts, nothing. It’s as if, in being with my parents, I’d thoroughly detoxed whatever I had to resolve about the generational issues passed down through my family.
The Surgery
Two weeks ago, I had a laparoscopic myomectomy to remove my fibroids. Ever since I scheduled the surgery, I heavily meditated on releasing and resolving all the issues that energetically contributed to my fibroids being created in the first place, towards a successful surgery, and towards a complete, optimal recovery. Pre-surgery, I continued with my herbal regimen, exercising, and healthy eating. No eating or drinking after midnight the night before surgery, and up by 5am to check into the hospital by 6am. My surgeon had already explained to me that it was common for the MRI’s and sonograms to be slightly off, in terms of accurately indicating the size and number of fibroids present, and so she let me know that, although her goal was to laparoscopically remove the fibroids, which she said was 2-3 weeks recovery time, it was a possibility that she may discover, during the surgery, that she might have to open me up abdominally and remove the fibroids through a c-section-like incision opening, which could take 4-6 weeks recovery. She said it all depends on whether or not the fibroids are on the outside of my uterus, as the scans showed. The consent I signed in the hospital was slightly alarming, in that it said that it may be necessary, depending on what is discovered during surgery, to perform a hysterectomy. But, inside, I knew that it wouldn’t come to that, especially because I had a feeling the fibroids were all, indeed, outside of my uterus.
I changed into the “warming robe” I was given by NYU Langone Medical Center. I was impressed how high tech things had gotten since my last surgery many years ago! This robe would keep me warm before, and during, surgery, and had openings for the staff to insert tubes, or only expose certain areas of the body for them to work on.
Once I’d changed into my warming robe, my vitals and intake were done by the nurse (surprisingly, my blood pressure was normal, not elevated, pre-surgery), then my anesthesiologist came in to chat with me, and then, my surgeon came in to review things with me, and tell me what to expect (though, she’d already covered a lot of ground with me in the pre-op consult.) She was accompanied by the doctor who leased the Da Vinci surgical robot that my surgeon would be using.
Once on the table, they prepared my legs with special coverings to keep me warm, and had placed a warm blanket over me. One of the staff inserted the anesthesia into my forearm. I remember looking up at the giant surgery lights that were soon to be turned on in my unconscious state, and calling my team of light to watch over me. Then, after some quick chatting with my surgeon, I was out.
I woke up in recovery, totally out of it and slightly nauseated. The nurse covered me with a warm blanket, and gave me some broken up saltines, graham crackers, and water, which I ate to help quell the nausea. However, my throat was so dry from the intubation (when they insert a tube down your throat during surgery), I could barely get the crackers down my throat. I just wanted to sleep all day. Turns out that the surgery was 4 hours long, and my total time in the hospital was 8.5 hours (in between prepping and recovery.) My surgeon had proudly reported to my loved one, who’d accompanied me, that, as she’s experienced many times before, the fibroids were larger in size, and more in number, than indicated in the scans, but she was able to remove every bit of them laparascopically, through an incision above my navel, and 2 smaller incisions on each side of my abdomen, because they were all, indeed, located on the outside of my uterus. She said she was surprised that I didn’t bleed at all! (Ah, the positive effects of mental, spiritual, and physical preparation!) She also found it remarkable that I didn’t have digestive issues, considering how much the fibroids, especially behind my uterus, were pressing on my system.
The Recovery
The first 2 days, I was pretty out of it, and slept most of the time. I only got up, with assistance, to go to the bathroom, and to take my painkiller and my Chinese herbal formula that helps to regenerate tissue, stop the bleeding, invigorate blood, bring down inflammation, reduce bruising, and promote healing. During the laparoscopic myomectomy, they fill your abdomen with air, to more easily work on the insides. Because of this, the abdominal pressure was uncomfortable in the beginning of the recovery, and the swelling takes a while to leave in general (I’m still a little bloated and swollen, 2 weeks later, but that’s to be expected for perhaps a few weeks, depending, but it’s greatly reduced since the first week of recovery, and the abdominal pressure somewhat subsided within the first day or two, and more fully subsided after about 2-3 days.)
Due to the intubation, my throat was very irritated and dry. So, I was coughing often. The actual pain post surgery wasn’t so bad, but it was the coughing that pulled on my fresh abdominal stitches that was most uncomfortable. I could only deal with soup for a few days, nothing solid. And, soon as I was able, I made myself some linden/nettle infusions to nourish myself with vital vitamins and minerals, and to support my throat and lungs. I did take throat lozenges, which felt nice on my throat, but did nothing for my cough. I did take some herbal cough syrup, which was somewhat helpful. But, what really helped to lubricate my throat again, and greatly reduce the coughing and irritation in my lungs turned out to be the linden/nettle infusion. I also set the intention that my cough would greatly resolve within 2 days, and it did.
My surgeon told me I may experience some constipation post-surgery for a few days, which was true. I was relieved when that ended 4 days post-surgery!
Although I still felt weak 3-4 days after surgery, I could tell I was getting stronger, and so I puttered around my apartment to get some exercise. My surgeon told me that I would heal faster if I depended less on the painkiller, and also was more physically active and walked a little bit. So I stopped taking the painkiller on my 6th day of recovery (I could’ve stopped a day or 2 earlier, but I just wanted to make sure), and, as I got stronger, I went from puttering about my apartment, to walking outside for a few blocks, a week after surgery. I increased the walking throughout the week, and earlier today, I took a slow 30 block stroll, without incident or pain. There is some bruising at some areas near the stitches, but moreso in the area of my lower abdomen, where my womb is.
As out of it was I was on day one of my recovery, my abdomen felt “clean”. My womb felt infused and alive again, now that those fibroids weren’t hogging up the blood flow! She actually felt happy. I envisioned her, even with her stitches, vibrant, happy, healing, feeling free from obstruction. As one of my friends, who does sound healing, suggested, I infused my second chakra and womb with what I want to fill all that new empty space with: healthy energy flow, love, light, creative expression, abundance, possibility, hope, healthy relationships and sexuality, and anything else I could think of that relates to the second chakra.
I send love daily to my womb, and I’ve been performing Reiki on it every day (although I do perform Reiki on myself every day, surgery or not!) I honor my whole body with Reiki post-surgery, my second chakra and womb has been getting center stage healing these days! It was interesting, because even though I was out of it the first two days of recovery, my hands were very “activated” (when Reiki practitioners can feel the universal energy flowing through their hands, our hands feel “activated”.) This makes perfect sense, because Reiki is all about channeling universal energy (in other words, it doesn’t come from your own energy source.) Even if I wasn’t conscious, my having set the intention to heal optimally and with ease, was already running its course. So, I just laid my hands on my stitches, second chakra, and womb, and passed out. I have been allowing myself to sleep for longer periods of time than usual, and I feel the benefits of all the rest!
I continue to take my Chinese herbal formula to promote healing, and my stitches are looking great, although they’re still covered by the tape that the surgeon put on them when she finished stitching me up. She will most likely remove them tomorrow, when I see her for my post-op consult.
Lessons learned, healing initiated and carried out, possibilities created, health recovered, womb reinfused with life, second chakra rebooted, body rejuvenated, honoring my sacred feminine, grateful to my ancestors and team of light for helping me understand what’s needed to be done, and grateful for the universal light and love that surrounds me as I recover.
Renewed and reignited, I am ready to serve, once again!
Why I’m Sharing My Story
When I was recovering and couldn’t really speak the first few days due to my sore throat, all I could really do was surf the net, check my email, text, and all the fun things one can do on the iPhone. I found it very calming and validating to find stories of women who’d gone through this surgery, and what they experienced afterwards. No, fibroids are not life threatening; but, depending on where they’re located, and how big they are, and how badly they’re obstructing body systems, they can be down right uncomfortable. I know some women who, because of the location and size of their fibroids, experience such pain during their period, that they vomit and faint. In some cases, fibroids can be a threat to a woman’s fertility. In short, it can really make a woman struggle with her perception of self as a female. I am so thankful for the stories these women posted on the internet forums, because it helped me when I had fibroids, and post-surgery. And if 3 out of 4 women get fibroids, I’m hoping my story can help women feel more informed about what fibroids are, what they mean, and let them know that they’re not alone!
Have you had fibroids? If so, how did the experience change you, and how did you address it? Not only would I like to know; but, by engaging in the comments, below, and sharing your story, you help empower women in creating community!
I’ve been out of the office for the past two weeks; but I am ready to be of service, and I look forward to seeing my patients this week!

March 10, 2015I feel very inspired after reading your story. I have very large fibroid tumors and discovered them in 2008. They are hereditary, my mother and two sisters had them as well. I am very annoyed with people asking if I’m pregnant and and very self-conscious about how these tumors have distorted my body. I visited a fertility specialist because my regular gynecologist told me she may have to perform a hysterectomy and I believe my uterus can be saved. My biggest fear now is that I don’t have a child so I’m really seeking God for how I should move forward. I even asked for guidance on Chinese herbs but was told the fibroids are too large to treat with these. Please pray for me.

March 14, 2015Hi Cassandra,
I’m glad my story inspired you! If you feel, on the deepest level, that your uterus can be saved, it is wise to find out what other options are available to you, as well as to ask your Spirit Guides for guidance to show you the best option for this issue. I don’t know how large your fibroids are; but it may be helpful to ask for a second opinion on the Chinese herbs, from a different Chinese Medicine practitioner.
Much luck!

October 13, 2015I am so glad I stumbled upon your website. I am 25 years old and am scheduled to have an abdominal myectomy next Monday. I have been trying to tap more into spirituality and less religion and I was told by two people fibroids represent a spiritual issue manifesting itself in the physical. Great to read this blog because I have has several unfortunate events occur this year and I do believe I never properly released and healed from them. My fibroids measure 19 cm and my uterus is the size of a soccer ball. I will definitely change my eating habits and look more into taking care of my spirit and energy. Will follow this blog.

December 3, 2016How was your surgery? I am just 23, and my fibroids are 15 cm, and will go into surgery next week.

July 10, 2016I would just like to express how grateful I am that I came across your particular story and how you felt and thought about it. I have been struggling with the fear and uncertainty that this condition brings for a few months now. I have spent countless hours reading things all over the Internet. My surgery is in less than two days and as a person who uses natural means of self care, acupuncture and Chinese medicine as my health support, reading your story has filled me with hope and light that I will carry with me on this journey. Thank you so much for sharing and for helping me to feel more safe and grounded in my decision.

March 18, 2014Thank you for sharing your story! I too am in my 1st week recovery of a laparoscopic myomectomy. My OBGYN told my parents He removed 7-8 with the largest being 9cm in diameter. I’m just so thankful that I listened to my body. I too believe that they energetically represent the things that you previously stated. It’s funny, because I felt this way immediately after they were removed and before I read your post. It was like a large burden was lifted from me. I was actually surfing the web to find more herbal or natural supplements to help prevent them from reoccurring. Thank you for sharing your insight. I have also read about raspberry leaf tea. Have you heard of this? I want to learn more about Reiki as well. I feel like I already practice a lot of this. It was passed down from my mother and ancestors. I just never knew that there was a formal study of these healing acts. Again, thank you for sharing! I have made a vow with myself that I won’t let things get me so stressed or bent out of shape again. There’s a line to how much stress you should carry. I realize that now. But back then, I never realized a line ever existed. I’m so thankful for another chance. Well, I’m 29 and bouncing back! What better birthday gift to myself, than getting rid of these painful fibroids! Happy early flirty 30 to me! Praise God! Thanks! Be blessed! 😉

March 18, 2014Thank you for sharing your story, Totalelegance! And, you’re welcome for my sharing my insight. I don’t find it coincidental at all, that you felt the energetic representations of your fibroids after they were removed and before reading my post. Almost as if you got a clearer picture of what created them energetically, after the fact.
Speaking of preventing reoccurrence, because of your post, and other inquiries I’ve received as a result of this post, I’ll be writing a follow up post of natural ways to address uterine health, particularly in preventing the reoccurrence of fibroids! And, raspberry leaf tea is excellent for uterine and reproductive health. It’s one of the things I’ll be covering in the follow-up post.
How fabulous that your family and ancestors have practiced Reiki! That would be helpful to have them perform Reiki on you, or if you could learn it so you can perform it on yourself.
Congratulations on recognizing whatever patterns you’ve needed to release and break the cycle of, as well as renewed health! May you heal effortlessly.

March 21, 2014Thank you so much for posting this. I’m on day two after this surgery and am feeling pretty well – just a little weak, some soreness in my abdomen and then some random trapped gas pain which has been occurring in my abdomen, chest, shoulders, and back.
I’m definitely interested in checking out acupuncture for some of the current and reiki to help with things going forward.
I do have one question – is there any special diet you’re on post-surgery to help you with healing and also to make yourself go to the bathroom regularly?
Thanks so much for your post!
Margarita Alcantara, M.S.Ac., L.Ac., Reiki Master/Teacher
March 22, 2014Totally my pleasure to share, jabbywu! Thank you for your comment. I’m glad that your surgery was successful, and that you’re now recovering smoothly. Yes, the abdominal soreness is from all the action it received, including the stitches, as well as from the bloating.
I wholeheartedly second checking out Acupuncture & Reiki to help you recover. These modalities have helped me immensely!
In regards to having any special diet post-surgery, choose lots of nourishing foods that build blood, such as beets, black beans, goji berries, baking things with blackstrap molasses, among a few things. Drink nourishing bone broths, too, because that will build your reserves. You can have a loved one make them for you, since you’re recovering. Check out my previous blog post on how to make traditional bone broth: https://alcantaraacupuncture.com/2013/05/06/traditional-chicken-bone-broth-a-recipe-to-build-qi-and-blood-for-immune-building-fertility-and-postpartum/. You can stick some goji berries in it, too!
As for going to the bathroom regularly, the constipation will end soon (it usually does in a few days). Just stay hydrated and keep drinking nourishing broths and foods, because it’s something that just needs to run its course.
I’ll be writing a follow up post on post-surgery self care, since I’ve gotten inquiries on follow-up care for a future post! Keep your eyes peeled.
Feel better soon!

August 25, 2014Thank you SO very much for this! I had a myomectomy 7/25. This coming Friday will be my 5th week of recovery. I am doing fairly well, but am a little concerned with returning to Pilates Instructor certification class tomorrow. I am going to ask to sit out for an extra week.
Your story greatly resonated with me as, I too have not only felt a change coming, but also frequently see 555 (as well as 222, 111, and 911). I had never thought that everything could be connected. The manifestation of the fibroids, my urge to regain my voice, returning to school – I now realize that everything is connected and that I don’t have to be afraid (although I still am sometimes). I will keep up my meager meditations and make my practice stronger and trust the process. Thank you again!

August 25, 2014My pleasure to be of service, Kia! I’m glad to hear that you’re doing fairly well in your recovery after your myomectomy. Take it easy with the pilates!
How wonderful that you’re seeing how everything is connected, and that you’re learning to regain your voice, as well as releasing some fears that have been inhibiting you. Meager meditations? Any meditation is good! Cultivating a practice of awareness, in whatever capacity works for you, is great.
May you continue to heal! And, thanks for reading,

November 19, 2014I am truly grateful, to have chanced upon your sharing on laparoscopic myomectomy, before my procedure which was scheduled in end Sept’14.
Because of your words, I was enlightened and braved myself through the whole process. I also made sure pre-surgery was well taken care of, with Traditional Chinese Medicine, preparing my body for the procedure and post-surgery recovery.
I had recovered well, and am back to practicing yoga, more rejuvenated than before.
Thank you so much for sharing your story, which inspired me to share mine as well, to allow this awareness amongst women who may feel negative about this condition.
P.S. I went through the same procedure, not because of fibroids, but adenomyosis.

November 19, 2014I’m so glad that my blog posts were helpful in physically and energetically preparing, and recovering from, your myomectomy, yingzzzjo! How fabulous that you were able to get back to your yoga practice, more rejuvenated than before. Kudos! I’m also glad to hear that you prepped yourself with some Traditional Chinese Medicine, before and after. I’m honored to be of help. It is our stories that inspire others to step forward and be better informed of their options when making health choices. And congratulations on your newest blog post!
Blessings,

January 3, 2015I’m so glad I found your blog!!! I Just decided to have surgery so that I may conceive this year. Now I hav an idea how to prepare before and after. Do you sell the Chinese herbal formula you used? If not so you mind letting me know what to use? Thank you so much for sharing, I look forward to reading more of your posts.

January 3, 2015Hi Crystal,
I’m glad to hear that my blog post was helpful towards your upcoming surgery and recovery. I do sell the Chinese herbal formula that I used. However, it’s a better idea to see a Licensed Acupuncturist for an evaluation before taking any Chinese herbal formula, since I’m not sure what your constitution is, of if any of the ingredients may be contraindicated for your condition. Check out NCCAOM’s website to find a licensed practitioner in your area at this link (NCCAOM is the licensure board for acupuncturists): http://mx.nccaom.org/FindAPractitioner.aspx.
Good luck!

January 23, 2015Hi Margarita!
First off, THANK YOU for quite an informative story.
I too suffer from one 5x4x4 submucosal fibroid located on the front of my uterus.
Unfortunately I suffer from all the symptoms of a troublesome fibroid.
Heavy bleeding landed me in the ER for a blood transfusion and the menstrual pain was absolutely awful.
I’ve had 4 wonderful children, all natural and no anesthesia but let me tell you the pain of a fibroid is no comparison to that of child birth.
I’ve been advised by my doctor that a hysterectomy might be something I should consider or a Laparoscopic Myomectomy.
Fortunately I have a doctor that is willing to go along with my holistic approach on either shrinking the fibroid or completely eliminate the fibroid.
I started a holistic approach along with the help of a Naturopathic Dr. this January 2015.
I was prescribed a tincture for dissolving the fibroid and will be starting the Castor Oil Packs as well.
I was also given SlowFlo which helps with the excessive bleeding.
I was also placed on a very strict diet eliminating saturated fats, caffeine and sugars.
I have to admit, it’s taking me quite a bit to figure out what I can eat but have definitely made the switch to just ORGANIC.
My husband and I had started this switch about a year ago but we fell off the wagon quite a few times and we fell hard!
Lots of meats, (not grass fed) lots of ham, plenty of sugars, (donuts, cookies, soda, cakes, pastries) and plenty of fast food…OH! and lets not forget the alcohol)
Yes, we would go out on weekend nights and have a few beers along with a couple of shots!
Since my fibroid discovery and visit to the ER, we made a solid decision to switch over permanently and no more alcohol.
As I mentioned previous, I was suffering from major blood loss every month and extreme pain.
I was informed during my visit to the ER that my fibroid was now putting pressure on my kidney tubes.
I was placed on Levora Birth Control and the bleeding along with the cramps did ease up until last month December 2014.
I had what they call “flooding” and we were on our annual winter vacation but for 3 days I was stuck indoors during the evening which is when my flow would start and end 3-4 hours later. They were super heavy!!!
Fortunately I was able to control it by tripling my Birth Control.
I was placed on Provera this last week which is a progesterone only hormone.
But I am seriously concerned about my dosage.
Each Provera pill is 10mg and I’ve been prescribed to take it 3 times a day 2 tablets each time which is a total of 60mg.
My concern is if I am doing my body a diservice by taking such a high dosage of progesterone while doing the holistic remedies.
I’d prefer to just drop the Birth Control all at once but I know it’s been prescribed due to the heavy bleeding.
Being that you have much knowledge in this area, would you recommend to just drop the BC and go full on ONLY holistic?
Also had one other question for you…For the Castor Oil Packs, do I need to use a wool/cotton flannel cloth or can I just simply apply the Castor oil directly onto my skin and cover it with saran wrap and place a towel over it and thereafter a heating pad.
Is there a great difference in either one?
I definitely want to go with the one that will help most!
Again thank you so much for sharing your story with us as it gives a lot of us much hope in ridding ourselves from these pesky little boogers! LOL
Thank you again and I greatly look forward to hearing your great advice.
Much love and light,
Mercedes 😉

January 30, 2015Hi Mercedes,
Thank you for sharing your story! Sounds like you are doing a lot of productive things to address the fibroids on a natural basis, as much as you can. Although I’m a healthcare practitioner, and have shared the challenges fibroids can bring, whether or not you decide to go off birth control is totally your call. It is true that the birth control dosage is quite high, and I’m not a big fan of hormonal birth control, especially for those dealing with fibroids. However, I know how necessary it might be for some to be on it, due to excessive bleeding, which definitely sounds like something you’re experiencing. You might want to visit your friendly local Licensed Acupuncturist to help you address the menorrhagia and fibroids. For the castor oil packs, you should totally use the flannel cloth along with it. Please check out my article, “How To Make A Castor Oil Pack: For Menstrual Cramps, Detoxing, Fibroids, and Muscle Pain” to get the 411 on how to make one, and create an effective castor oil treatment.
Much luck to you!

February 7, 2015Hi Margarita, thank you for sharing your story, I am in the process of getting removed 2 fibroids and I am glad I found your blog, I am a yoga teacher & I asked the same question why did I get this in my body, but after reading your article I am able to understand more…
I’ll be getting surgery at the end of this month.
Getting rid of all and giving space to rebirth of the new 🙂

February 7, 2015Hi Janina,
“Getting rid of all and giving space to rebirth of the new” – I love it! Yes, some ladies may opt for surgery, others may find it’s not their best recourse; but, I’m glad you found the method that works best for you. It is always enlightening when we discover what we create within ourselves. Good luck on your upcoming surgery, and make sure to fill in that new space with all the wonderful things you want to birth!
Best,
Margarita

March 8, 2015Hi Marguerite
thank you for your article. I suspect I have Fibroids. I have been through a lot of stress and sorrow that I put all my energy into work that is not creative.
I plan to have a check up.
Of interest is your ref to 555 and to another reader to 911. My son sees 911 all the time. Can you advise me what this means?
Thank you.
Margarita Alcantara, M.S.Ac., L.Ac., Reiki Master/Teacher
March 10, 2015Hi Julia,
I’m glad you’ll be checking out the status of your fibroids, and general health! I’m not an expert in numerology, so you should Google this to be sure, but it seems 911 in numerology may be a message to heed the calling as a lightworker.
Thanks for reading,

April 19, 2015Thank you so much for sharing your story (I came across your blog, by searching for natural cures for fibriods and Myomectomy recovery), made me feel not alone dealing with this.
I jus had my Myomectomy surgery on Tuesday 4-14-15. They look one fibriod 13mm from my uterus. So basically it was a c-section surgery. This is my first surgery and I am 30yrs old with no children (wants children) and cause my MRI report said that it could be cancer I had no choice other than straight surgery and hope that it wasn’t so they didn’t have to perform hysterectomy on me.
But God is good and it wasn’t cancer. I am home now recovering….with all the research it said 4..6weeks. I have already cut down on pain killers but I want to incorporate some natural (even homeopathic) remedies to help me recover inside and out. You talked about Chinese healing remedies that helped you….would you please help me as where I can get that or recipe or other recourses that can help me with this recovery process. It’s been so hard as I live alone and I have been always active in everything I do. I have cried myself to bed last two days because as how disable I feel. Please help!
Margarita Alcantara, M.S.Ac., L.Ac., Reiki Master/Teacher
April 22, 2015Congratulations on your successful surgery and benign tumor diagnosis, Sharan! I can totally understand how debilitating it feels when you’re recovering.
As I’d mentioned in a reply in an above post, it’s a better idea to see a Licensed Acupuncturist for an evaluation before taking any Chinese herbal formula, since I’m not sure what your constitution is, of if any of the ingredients in the Chinese herbal formula may be contraindicated for your condition. Check out NCCAOM’s website to find a licensed practitioner in your area at this link (NCCAOM is the licensure board for acupuncturists): http://mx.nccaom.org/FindAPractitioner.aspx.
Another idea is to drink healing bone broth soups (I wrote a blog post on how to make one), as well as having congees with herbs in it like Huang Qi and Gou Qi Zi, to help you build your Qi back up.
Good luck!

June 18, 2015Hi Margarita,
Thank you for sharing your inspiring story. This forum has made me realize I am not alone. I had my myomectomy surgery in mid April, 2015. It”s about 8 weeks now and I feel so strong. I was scared initially but became stronger as my surgery date drew nearer. It wasn’t an easy time I must confess especially for the first 3 days post surgery. The pains were something else. I started moving around from the day after and continued taking short strolls which helped me a great deal. Coughing and vomiting were my greatest threats, but alas, I overcame all that and was fully recovered 3 weeks after surgery. I resumed work on the 4th week and have been doing great ever since. Recently went for my checkup and my Doctor say I am fine. Now I am ready to have my babies by God’s Grace. Raspberry leaf tea rocks my world right now.
Margarita Alcantara, M.S.Ac., L.Ac., Reiki Master/Teacher
June 22, 2015Hi Nonnie,
Thanks for sharing your story! No, you are certainly not alone. I’m glad to hear that you are recovering well! You may want to include Qi Gong or other Qi-building gentle movement to build the qi flow post-surgery, when you’re ready (sometimes surgery can create blocks within the body). Glad you’re enjoying the raspberry leaf tea!
Blessings,
Margarita

July 19, 2015Margarita, Thank you for sharing your journey. I am newly entering a more holistic way of living and your story is both inspiring and educative. Thank you for sharing in detail the natural herbs and tinctures you used, the reasons why you did, how you balanced internal and external processes, and how you directed your energy and intentions toward self-healing and recovery. Thank you also for your honesty about the range of emotions you experienced. Your story serves as a model for how to approach self-care and healing. Wishing you the very best!

July 20, 2015Hi Lorna,
Congratulations on entering a more holistic way of living! It is a path not for the faint-hearted, but it will make you stronger, and you will be more in touch with your radiant joy at new levels. I so appreciate the validation on my story! It is truly a personal one, and one I had to think about before publishing. But, I’m glad it’s helpful to readers, such as yourself.
Here’s to your new found light,

September 15, 2015Thank you so much for sharing your story! This was particularly helpful to me because prior to learning of my fibroids I led what I thought was a pretty healthy lifestyle and I have been trying to go the natural route with shrinking my fibroids (one 9cm, one 5cm) but with only minimal success. I am very frustrated. The fibroids are pressing up against my bladder and causing me digestive difficulties. I have met with three different naturopaths (who said don’t get the surgery) and then with two surgeons. Both of the surgeons have advised me that the fibroids are too big to operate on laparoscopically–they say I have to get a myomectomy. However, your fibroids were just as big as mine and you were able to get laparascopic surgery. The surgeons have said that I am too small for the procedure and will have to be cut open (C-section type surgery). This may sound like a weird question, but what size are you? I’m asking because I wonder if perhaps I should keep looking for a surgeon who is willing to do laprascopic surgery as opposed to the open myomectomy on me. I am not happy about the prospect of having a 4-6 week recovery time, or of having the large scar across the lower stomach area. Thanks in advance for your response and thank you again for sharing your story! All the best.
Angela
September 15, 2015Clarification: surgeons are saying I must get an open myomectomy I mean (as opposed to a laprascopic myomectomy).

September 17, 2015Hi Angela,
I’m glad you enjoyed my post! Yes, the decision whether or not to have surgery is a very personal decision. The right one is the one that you feel serves you best. In regards to surgery, it depends on the surgeon. What surgery you receive is not usually based on body size (unless you’re extremely tiny, perhaps), but on how that surgeon does his/her/their thing, and possibly the location of the fibroids. It may be worth it to get a second opinion.
Good luck!

September 18, 2015Hi Margarita,
Thanks for sharing your story and it’s truly inspiring. I am a PhD student and came last year to Canada from India. Suddenly,my periods started to get worse and I had unbearable cramps and bleeding heavily. As an outcome, I had to get hospitalized for a day and doctors figured it out that I have a very big (10x8x11cm) fibroid that is causing a problem. They referred me to OB-GYN and then the doctor put me on Lupron for 3 months and then on fibristal till my surgery (waiting time was almost an year) is done. Today I came to know that the surgery is going to be on Oct 5, 2015.
Out of curiosity, I started to browse about laparoscopic mymectomy (I don’t know the exact procedure) and came across your blog. The information you have provided is far way better then google indeed. I am little nervous as it’s going to affect my studies but have hope that I will be more efficient than before. :)… Please let me know if you have any suggestions; although your blog says eveything…just in case.
Thanks for providing us ladies such useful information.

September 18, 2015Hi Jyoti,
Thanks for your comment. I’m glad my post was helpful! You may want to check out Part I and II in the “When Healers Get Fibroids” series, where I talk about my fibroid discovery and post-surgery aftercare. I’m not sure if you’re asking about how the surgery will affect your studies, or the recovery afterwards. Either way, post-surgery, you will no longer have all that blood being directed into the fibroids! Which can only bode well for general blood flow, including to the brain, which should help with studies. Check out Part III of the series, which may answer your questions post-surgery.
Blessings,
Margarita

September 20, 2015Margarita,
I am so glad I found your blog! I was preparing to have a surgery myomectomy and stumbled on your blog browsing the Internet. I have very similar situation to yours. I have fibroids about the same size as yours. Fertility doctor told me I have to have them removed. I was terrified of the surgery because I have never had a surgery before. My mind started playing all possible side effects that could be caused by the surgery. My goal is to have a baby. I was advised to take care of the fibroids before getting pregnant because the chances of miscarriage and premature delivery are quite high. But what if the surgery will make it worse for me instead of improving the health of my uterus then I will loose my chance to ever have a baby! That is my main concern. I decided to try a natural approach to deal with the fibroids. I read on the Internet and Youtube about dietary supplements Serrapetase. Nattokinase, Lumbrokinase. There is a lot of hype around these enzymes. They supposed to literally dissolve fibroids and even old scar tissue.
I took these with Vitamin D and DIM religiously for about 6 months. Then I went to see my OBGYN for an ultrasound. No change what so ever in my fibroids size. I was crushed emotionally. Then I did more research and started to figure out that the cause of my problem laid in the hormonal imbalance, possible estrogen dominance. So I started taking Vitex and Red Clover (briefly) Cinnamon & Hoelen 5 for another 6 months. I also took Pau D’Arco and liquid vitamins and minerals. I went organic too. Vitex really helped me to reduce menstrual bleeding to a manageable level. Another ultrasound after 6 months and again no change in the fibroid size. I lost all faith in herbal supplements. So I finally decided to have the myomectomy. Then I found your blog and felt relieved knowing that I made the right decision about the surgery since you opted for it too instead of choosing alternative methods. You must know exactly what herbs would help versus myself. I felt like a blind kitten in the dark surrounded by hundreds of supplements.
Today was the scheduled day of my surgery. I came to the hospital at 5:30am. I was all ready hooked up to the IV and in my paper gown. The surgeon came to see me and he explained that my hemoglobin level is half the normal. I am anemic. Everybody was surprised by the news even the doctor. So it was not safe for me to undergo the surgery. I had an option to get a blood transfusion or to reschedule for later date until my hemoglobin is restored to healthy level. I decided to postpone to avoid unnecessary risk and complications. Now I have to take iron supplements and eat a lot of liver. I was also put on Lupron to shut down my hormones in hopes to restore my hemoglobin and shrink the fibroids. I have 2 months to prepare my body for the myomectomy.
I would be very grateful if you could share with me exactly what herbs did you mean when you wrote: ” I found out that with the Chinese herbs, alone, I could greatly reduce each fibroid to the size of a golf ball within 3-4 months”
I would like to take those herbs for the next 2 months in hope that my fibroids shrink and I will have an easier surgery.
My surgeon explained that he recommends against the laparoscopic myomectomy because of the size of my fibroids. he might even make an up and down long incision instead of side to side C-section incision. He says that it would be extremely difficult to stitch the uterus through a navel incision not to mention to remove the large extracted fibroid from a tiny hole. So I truly hope for a miracle that my fibroids shrink in the next 2 months and I may have a laparoscopic myomectomy.
I will be grateful if you can give me recommendations on the herbs to take. I know you prefer to refer to a local chinese medicine practitioner. But I do not believe that I could find one in my area.
God bless you for all your help! Thank you for being there for us!
Margarita Alcantara, M.S.Ac., L.Ac., Reiki Master/Teacher
September 24, 2015Hi Inesa,
Thanks for reading! Yes, you’re right, I don’t do online recommendations of Chinese Herbal formulas, for the reasons that I’d explained, above. You can search for a Licensed Acupuncturist and Chinese Medicine practitioner in your area via NCCAOM’s website, also listed above. A Google search for a Licensed Acupuncturist in your zip code would also do the trick. Hopefully you will connect with someone locally who can help you with this process.
Good luck!

October 5, 2015Hi. Thanks for writing this. I know my fibroid has been growing for years, but i discovered it at a time when all of the things you mentioned about energy… are at their peak. I find that super fascinating. I’m gonna try to listen to whatever message is here.

June 5, 2016Hi,
Thank you so much for this. I made the decision today that the third doctor who recommends surgery, I will say, “I’m ready. Yes.” I have suffered from heavy bleeding and sometimes debilitating pain for 5 years! I resonated with the energetic causes of fibroids and believe it may be generational as well.
This was my thing too: I want to see if I can shrink them naturally first. But I judged and judged and judged myself for having them. And for not being able to stick to any regimen that I read works. All bazillion of them. Now, I eat whole foods, way less sugar than before, cook at home, get my green smoothies in, and I supplement with whole food supplements as much as possible. Due to cost sometimes I don’t. But because I’m anemic as well at times, I’m going to do the Floradix Multi (or some other liquid multi) and their Iron. It’s one of the best. Hemaplex tablets also work well for me and are non-constipating.
I’m curious to know: did your fibroids actually shrink after you began herbal remedies to do this?
And
Did they try to get you to go on Lupron or Depro to shrink the fibroids? I have anemia and am a heavy bleeder so they recommended it for me both times, but I wasn’t ready.
Again, thank you. This has given me SO much peace.
Margarita Alcantara, M.S.Ac., L.Ac., Reiki Master/Teacher
June 7, 2016Hi Helese,
Thanks for reading! Yes, it’s important to get the iron in, since you’re anemic and you suffer from heavy bleeding. Lupron and Depro were not recommended in my case, and I did feel some results with the herbal formulas. However, you can only tell if they’ve shrunk after a few months of being on strict herbal formula regimen, clean diet, etc., and then getting another sonogram a few months down the line from the first one. I wasn’t on the herbs long enough to make an accurate assessment, due to my decision to have surgery.
Good luck!

September 14, 2016Hi Margarita,
I am so happy to have stumbled upon your website/ blog. First of all just reading your blog for the first time, brings more ease to how I have been feeling for the last year or so. I am 35 and have a 7cm fibroid. I like many other women have never none about even having one until the fibroid started growing causing other internal issues. I found out I had one after becoming pregnant with my beautiful son. Thankfully I was able to carrier my son to full term with a great and healthy pregnancy. My mid wives had me under tight supervision with Ultra sounds every 4 weeks. When it was time to deliver my son, I was only able to deliver via C-section has my Fibroid was blocking my canal and my son wasn’t able to move down for a vaginal birth. I was still blessed to have a save delivery and recovery wasn’t too bad. I’m not sure if it was so due to me being an active person (worked out and ran until I gave birth with my son). My Fibroid began to shrink while I nursed my son but once I stopped nursing at 12 months thats when things changed. I had a lot of anxiety all the time, night sweats (hormonal changes), my face started breaking out in the same regions as you indicated, my periods were very heavy etc… I started seeing a Natural Path to help about 2 years ago and she has helped quite immensely. I have been doing acupuncture, taking a tincture, castero packs, herbs, and have changed my diet to more plant based. I have been going in for ultra sounds every 6 months and have noticed since my last ultra sound that my Fibroid is still at the same size considering how aggressive it’s been since 2 years ago. I have decided that because it has been so aggressive that I would like to have it removed and surgery has been booked in November. I have mixed emotions as I am not sure if the anxiety (hormonal) changes are the cause of my Fibroid growing so aggressively. This is also hereditary as my sisters and aunts have had Fibroids and have had hysterectomies. I do some light yoga and breathing techniques when I especially feel the anxiety starting up which seems to be a lot stronger now a days, but I find that being mindful, or even meditation is so difficult for me. I would love to be more calm but I just can’t find it in me to even understand where to start? I’m asking you for any help, or guidance if possible as I would like to prepare myself, mentally, physically but most of all mindfully before my surgery. I appreciate you taking the time to write your journey and hope to hear from you soon?
apologies for the long comment…
Many Thanks

September 16, 2016Hi Emm,
Thanks for sharing your story!
To prepare yourself for the surgery, one or more of the following may be helpful: finding a therapist to help you process your anxiety around it, practicing a guided meditation (if you’d like, I have a great short guided meditation MP3 that I’ve created as my “opt-in gift” that you can sign up for at the top of this website, which is a grounding meditation that goes through all the chakras), receiving an acupuncture or Reiki treatment to help ground you and prepare on all levels pre-surgery, a workout that gets your heart rate going to release your stagnated Liver Qi, among some options.
Good luck!

December 15, 2016Thank you for sharing your story. I could relate since after my divorce a few years ago I too discovered that I had a large fibroid in my uterus.
At the time I felt like an outsider in my job (actually in my whole life!) and marriage failing I realized I needed a big change in my life. I resigned, moved out of the country and started reviving my creative powers. Since then my life has completely changed its course and I work in an artistic profession. I was due to go to the same operation as you but after moving abroad all my symptoms subsided.
I love hearing about the energy point of view. In my family there are deep wounds and I’ve felt like being the one who’s healing all that, ending the agony of generations before me.

December 24, 2016Hello Margarita,
I was so relieved to read your story! I have been suffering for several years with a fibroid that keeps slowly getting larger and larger. I have tried some natural supplements without any success. I am miserable and desperate and I am now considering a laparoscopic myomectomy if possible. I also live in the NYC area and wondered if I could meet with you? I would love to get your advice on how to prepare and recover from this surgery if I decide to go through with it. I have spoken to a number of surgeons and I think I found a good one, but I would like to know who you went to. Would you please email me as soon as you are able? Thank you so much for your inspiring story!

I’m glad my story resonated with you! Please read all three blog posts to answer your questions about my surgery experience. If you’d like to have a further discussion, please book an appointment online so we can do that in full.
I look forward to connecting with you!

October 17, 2018I have been following you on these for months now, thanks. I have been using the castor park. I was operated in the year 2016 and it reoccurred again and this time with a swollen stomach like 6 months pregnancy as we speak now my foots are swollen. And am scared of going back for Klee please help a sister. Thank you

October 17, 2018Hi Margarita, thank you for your inspiring and helpful post. I would be grateful for your thoughts on when I should resume acupuncture after myomectomy. I had a myomectomy one week ago and the next phase of my fertility journey is a frozen embryo transfer in 3 months time. When should I resume acupuncture and should I be asking my acupuncturist to do anything differently? With many thanks.

April 13, 2022Wow, almost a decade later and your experience is still nourishing people! Thank you for writing out your experience!
So much resonates about your process! I also keep seeing 555 and the image of a chrysalis! Was wild to read your post and feel all is in divine order.
I’m going into surgery on Friday.
All the best to you and your healing in the world ❤️
