Daring To Be Powerful When Revisiting Our Past

“When I dare to be powerful – to use my strength in the service of my vision,
then it becomes less and less important whether I am afraid.”

– Audre Lorde

Other than being a wise quote from a wonderful warrior woman poet, Audre Lorde, whose birthday I honor today, this quote helps us realize that each one of us has the power to have strength towards vision, and that, in being in our power, our fear becomes less important. I find this even more significant during this time of Mercury Retrograde (egads), where travel, transportation, communication, and tech and computer transactions can be adversely effected (or in the very least, you’d need to make sure to back up your computer, allow extra time for commuting, and give some leeway for possible miscommunications with people.) As an aside, did you know that Yoko Ono only signed contracts under Mercury Retrograde, because it made them easier to renegotiate later? That’s a good way of making the stars work in your favor!

What Mercury Retrograde is also known for is for bringing the past into the present. From past issues that are resurfacing to finally be dealt with (because we are repeatedly visited by old issues until we finally address them!), to past loves dropping you a line out of the blue, to old friends/family ties/colleagues whom you’ve lost touch with tracking you down. For some people, it may be a welcome thing to go down memory lane. If it’s old stuff you’ve been suppressing and avoiding, however, the revisiting of these issues may be downright unpleasant.

It is easy to be sucked into the black vortex of what you used to be. This can bring up potent fear, especially if it was a place that brought sorrow, or revisits a time when you felt disempowered. But, know that you will never endure what you cannot handle, even if you think it’ll swallow you up alive.

The trick to not be swallowed up by what used to be is to remember that your past does not define you. It doesn’t matter how hard your life was before. If you’ve created a life full of meaning since, nothing can take away what you’ve created (unless you give someone permission to.) This is because whatever inner work you’ve done in order to come to this point can never be undone. You can literally never be in the same space you were when you felt disempowered, alone, angry, or full of sorrow, because you have changed. Of course, life provides us many twists and turns in order for us to live our life more fully, and with higher vibration. And, it’s up to us to learn the lessons, or be/stay stuck.

So, when the past does come a knockin’, don’t run and hide, alarmed because you thought the issue was resolved, but fearful that it hasn’t been. The truth is, if you feel the issue was resolved, it’s likely that it was, and you’re just releasing old remnants of its shadow. Either that, or you hadn’t resolved it in the first place! But, if you’ve really looked within, the former scenario is more likely.

How do you remain in your power when your past comes to visit, whether it be wonderful or uncomfortable?

  1. Remember that your past does not define you.
  2. Remember that whatever you are given to experience, you can handle.
  3. Remember that your strength in vision is stronger than your fear.
  4. Don’t judge your reaction. It is what it is, and it’s enough.
  5. Surround yourself with nourishing people, places, and things, so you are reminded of the good in your life that you’ve created, and who presently support you.
  6. Be kind to yourself, and give yourself time to digest the situation.

Have issues from the past been resurfacing for you?
If so, how were you able to stand in your strength?

In service of your vision,
